Zhu Yishi was awarded the 2023 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad

kato_pickato_picZhu Yishi (D3), standing out from the competition, has been granted “the 2023 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad” by China Scholarship Council. This award, starting in 2003, was founded by the Chinese government with the purpose of rewarding the academic excellence of self-financed Chinese students studying overseas. Only those with outstanding performance in their PhD studies or post-doctoral research will be considered by the award selection panel and no more than 650 young talents will be granted the award each year all over the world. Prof. Kato received a letter of appreciation from Secretary-General, China Scholarship Council.

kato_pic Panasonic Holdings and Tohoku University established the “Panasonic Holdings x Tohoku Univ. Co-creation Research Center” on July 1, 2024 at Tohoku University, Aobayama Campus. The co-creation research center will promote research based on intellectual property that combines Panasonic HD’s technological capabilities with Tohoku University’s research capabilities, actively promoting real product implementation to create new value and solve social problems. The institute will start its activities with Professor Nei Kato as the Administrative Support Manager and Associate Professor Yuichi Kawamoto as a participating researcher.

The award was established in 2010 to recognize the recipient of the JSPS Ikushi Prize. Guo Qi (D3) was awarded President’s Award of Tohoku University, and Ryuhei Hibi (M2) was awarded the Dean Award of the Graduate School of Information Sciences (GSIS) of Tohoku University. These awards are selected from 150 students of the GSIS doctor and master courses. The President’s Award is given to 2 students and the Dean Award is given to 4 students.

Hiroaki Hashida (D3, JSPS Research Fellow) has been selected as recipients of the JSPS Ikushi Prize

kato_pickato_picHiroaki Hashida (D3, JSPS Research Fellow) received the certificate and medal at the 14th JSPS Ikushi Prize. The JSPS Ikushi Prize is given by His Majesty the Emperor Emeritus Akihito to encourage and support young scientists who are working diligently to advance their studies and research, and is intended to formally recognize outstanding doctoral students who can be expected to contribute to Japan’s future scientific advancement.
The award ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Meiji Kinenkan in February 2024.

Co-Creation Institute of Space-Integrated Network for Resilient Digital Transformation” on November 1, 2023 at Tohoku University, Aobayama Campus. Aiming to contribute to the resilience of information systems, NEC will invest in the acceleration of research and development towards the establishment and practical application of new network technologies for Beyond 5G networks and the integration of the space, air, and ground systems. Hiroaki Hashida (D2, JSPS Fellow) was awarded Yasujiro Niwa Outstanding Paper Award, which is given to the researcher who announced original and excellent contribution in the fields of electronic engineering and information communication and also other related fields such as computer science from 1977. This prize was established to commemorate Dr. Yasujiro Niwa, the first president of Tokyo Denki University. The award ceremony was held at Kitasenju Campus of Tokyo Denki University, with attendance of Ibamoto Gakucho.

Prof. Kato selected as Highly Cited Researchers 2021 in the field of Computer Science

Prof. Kato was selected as one of Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2021 in the field of Computer Science for the third consecutive year. Dr. Zubair Md. Fadlullah (currently Associate Professor at Lakehead University, Canada) and Dr. Fengxiao Tang (currently Professor at Zhongnan University, China), both of whom worked in our laboratory, were also selected for the first time. Both have received the Tohoku University President’s Award in 2010 and 2018, respectively.

Prof. Kawamoto was awarded IEEE COMSOC Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award

Prof. Yuichi Kawamoto was awarded the IEEE COMSOC Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award. IEEE COMSOC Asia-Pacific belongs to the IEEE Communications Society, which is the best information and communications society in the world. This award is given to only six researchers who are under 35 years old and have achieved excellent results over the last three years. He received the award for his outstanding research work on unmanned aircraft networks.

Thuan Ngo (D3)and Tiago Gama Rodrigues (M2) were awarded Tohoku University Graduation Awards

The graduation ceremony of Tohoku University was held on Mar. 24, 2017 at the Sendai City Gymnasium. Thuan Ngo (D3) was awarded the President’s Award of Tohoku University and the Dean’s Award of the Graduate School of Information Sciences (GSIS) of Tohoku University. Tiago Gama Rodrigues (M2) was also awarded the Dean’s Award. These awards are selected from 150 students of the GSIS doctor and master courses. The President’s Award is given only to 2 students, and from the Kato-Nishiyama Laboratory, this is the 7th President’s Award. The Dean’s Award is given to 5 students and 2 were from our laboratory. Students of our laboratory have won the Dean’s Award for 7 years in a row and 2 students receiving the Dean’s Award at the same time is the fourth time.

Demonstration of Relay-by-Smartphone® in the Philippines

We performed a demonstration of Relay-by-Smartphone® assuming a situation for collecting information of disaster victims outside of communication range, and it was successful in gathering disaster information (name and face photograph of victims) in emergency response headquarters at San Remigio, Cebu, Philippines on Aug. 2nd, 2016. The Relay-by-Smartphone® technique has been developed by our laboratory.

Through the questionnaire of this demonstration and Relay-by-Smartphone®, it has been confirmed that the Relay-by-Smartphone® technique can help gather information, indicating its usefulness in disaster situations. Also, many answers of the questionnaire suggested possibilities for its use in daily life.

Due to their notable contributions, the Certificate of Appreciation was given by the Municipal Mayor of San Remigio to Prof. Nei Kato, Assoc. Prof. Hiroki Nishiyama, Daiki Murayama (M2), Naoki Miyashita (M2), Naoto Yamada (M2), Hiroaki Takagi (M1), and Yuki Takahashi (M1).

2015年11月17日~19日にフィリピン セブ島のサン・レミジオ市において、耐災害通信技術の実証実験を行い、 現地にて展開されているNTT未来ねっとが開発した「移動式ICTユニット」と、当研究室が開発した 「通信性能最適化アルゴリズム」の連動における実現可能性の検証に成功しました。
本実験は現地にて高く評価され、本実験に参加した加藤寧教授、西山大樹准教授、須藤克弥(D3)、村山大貴(M1)、 栗林秀樹(B4)が市長より感謝状を受賞しました。(学年は2015年11月時点)

The title of Thuan Ngo’s presentation was “GHAR: Graph-based Hybrid Adaptive Routing for Cognitive Radio Based Disaster Response Networks”, Masanori Horiuchi’s presentation was “Throughput Maximization for Long-Distance Real-Time Data Transmission over Multiple UAVs” and Hideki Kuribayashi’s presentation was “A Mobility-Based Mode Selection Technique for Fair Spatial Dissemination of Data in Multi-Channel Device-to-Device Communication”. In this conference, Thuan Ngo and Hideki Kuribayashi received the Best Paper Award. The ICC is one of the largest conferences that the IEEE Communications Society organizes. This year, 39% of the 2,469 submitted papers were accepted, and 15 of them were chosen as the Best Paper Award.

On Nov. 24th, 2015, we participated in a research interaction event which was held in Taipei, Taiwan, as part of the JST Infrastructure Development for Promoting International S&T Cooperation. We had discussions on network construction technology needed to realize IoT services for the research on “Effective and Secure innovative ID management technology for Large Scale IoT”. In this event, there were research reports and discussions in the form of workshops at the National Taiwan University, and there were valuable exchanges of ideas between researchers.

The commencement ceremony of Tohoku University was held on Mar. 25, 2015 at the Sendai City Gymnasium. Daisuke Takaishi (M2) was awarded the President’s Award of Tohoku University and the Dean’s Award of the Graduate School of Information Sciences (GSIS) of Tohoku University. Kazuma Kaneko (M2) was also awarded the Dean’s Award. These awards are selected from 150 students of the GSIS doctor and master courses. The President’s Award is given only to 2 students, and from the Kato-Nishiyama Laboratory, this is the 5th President’s Award. The Dean’s Award is given to 4 students and 2 were from our laboratory. Students of our laboratory have won the Dean’s Award for 5 years in a row and 2 students receiving the Dean’s Award at the same time is the second time.

The A3 annual workshop was successfully held at Busan, Korea from 4th to 7th February, 2015. In this workshop, the participants, in particular young researchers, actively reported and discussed their current research. JSPS “A3 Foresight Program: Research on Next Generation Internet and Network Security” led by Prof. Kato was highly evaluated at end-term evaluation. Dr. Jiajia Liu became a professor at Xidian University

Our laboratory won the tournament again for our seventh consecutive victory. This record for consecutive wins is the new record in the history of the ECEI department’s Ekiden tournament.

平成25年7月30日と31日に開催される東北大学工学部情報知能システム総合学科(追記:2015年4月、電気情報物理工学科に名称変更)のオープンキャンパスにおいて、スマートフォンだけでつくるネットワーク(スマホdeリレー®)を使ったデモンストレーションを実施します。また、無線通信機を搭載した無人飛行機や超高速インターネット衛星との接続実験も公開します。スマホのみでネットワークを自由自在に形成(携帯電話回線ではなくWiFiのみを使用)してメール送受信を可能にするスマホdeリレー®は、衛星や無人飛行機との接続によってメールリレーの範囲を大幅に拡大できるため、特に災害時などに被災地域内のみならず遠隔地をも含めた情報共有を可能にする最先端ICTツールとして期待されています。

A3 Annual Workshop in Sapporo, Japan Successfully Held

alllarge katolarge The A3 annual workshop was successfully held at Sapporo, Japan from 10th to 12th July, 2013. On the first day of the workshop, Prof. Nei Kato, an A3 representative from Tohoku University, gave the opening speech, Prof. Dan Keun Sung from KAIST and Prof. Yixian Yang from BUPT gave the keynote speech, and the participants of the workshop reported their current research progress. On the following two days, the participants had active discussions in each group according to their research field for further collaboration. The workshop gave the participants, especially students, a good opportunity to share valuable ideas/information and build a stronger friendship with A3 members from other countries.

Professor Genkuro Fujino Award is given to the talented graduate students from China who are expected to achieve major results in the future. This prize was established to commemorate Professor Genkuro Fujino, the teacher of Lu Xun sensei. The presentation ceremony was held at Lu Xun lecture hall with attendance of Satomi Soucho, and Takeshi Ebata, Chairman of Miyagi Japan-China Friendship Association as shown in the picture.

The title of the Kenta Suzuki’s presentation was “A Bandwidth Allocation Method to Improve User QoS Satisfaction Without Decreasing System Throughput in Wireless Access Networks” and Liu Wei’s presentation was “A Novel Gateway Selection Method to Maximize the System Throughput of Wireless Mesh Network Deployed in Disaster Areas”, respactively, and Liu Wei received the Student Travel Grant.

IEEE Communications Magazine paper was listed among top 10 downloaded articles.

The article entitled “Toward Intelligent Machine-to-Machine Communications in Smart Grid”, which appeared in IEEE Communications Magazine, volume 49, issue 4, April 2011, was amongst the top ten downloaded articles in IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) in April(reference) and May(reference), 2011. Also, the article was listed in the top 100 downloaded articles in IEEE Xplore for several months up to August 2011.(reference) Within a short time, it has been cited 34 times as reported by Google Scholar. This paper was co-authored with NTT Energy and Environment System Laboratories under a Smart Grid joint project.

A3 Annual Workshop in Shanghai Successfully Held

2012-6-28-all 2012-6-28-katolab The A3 annual workshop was successfully held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China from 28th to 30th June, 2012. At the first day of the workshop, Prof. Kato and Prof. Dan Keun Sung from KAIST gave the keynote speech as Japanese PI and Korean PI, respectively. At the following two days, participants of the workshop, mainly students, delivered a talk on current research progress at each session and had active discussions in each group according to research field. The workshop gave the participants a good opportunity to share valuable ideas/information with each other and build a stronger friendship with A3 members from other countries.

icc201206212 icc201206214 icc201206216 At the ICC 2012 in Ottawa, Yuichi Kwamoto, Atsushi Yoshinari, and Zubair Md. Fadlullah presented various papers. The paper titles are “Assessing Packet Delivery Delay in Multi-Layered Satellite Networks”, “Dynamic Topology Update Mechanism in Local Tree-based Reliable Topology (LTRT) based MANETs” and “A Game Theoretic Approach to Integrate Security with Quality of Service”. Jiajia Liu presented two papers entitled “Capacity vs. Delivery Delay in MANETs with Power Control and f-castRelay” and “Delivery Ratio in Two-Hop Relay MANETs with Limited Message Lifetime and Redundancy”. For this year’s ICC, five papers from Kato-Nishiyama Lab were accepted in areas of satellite communications, ad hoc networks, and wireless networking.

Jiajia Liu was awarded 2011 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad

20120525_202400 20120525_202559 jiajiacga3 JSPS Fellow, Ph.D candidate Jiajia Liu was awarded 2011 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad. Jiajia is engaged in the research of next generation ad hoc networks and he is the only awardee selected from all Chinese students studying in the ICT areas in Japan. Prof. Kato received a letter of appreciation from Secretary-General, China Scholarship Council.

A3 Foresight Program(JSPS) awarded

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science(JSPS) has awarded A3 Foresight Program FY2011 to Prof. Kato who will serve as the PI in Japan side. The program, entitled “Research on Next Generation Internet and Network Security”, will be jointly conducted by teams from Tsukuba University, Aizu University, and NiCT. Counterparts are Shanghai Jiao Tong University(PI: Prof. Zhenfu Cao) and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology(PI: Prof. Dan Keun Sung). A3 Foresight Program is also financially supported by NSFC of China and NRF of Korea. It will last three years starting from 1st Aug. 2011.

This award was selected from more than 150 graduate students in fiscal year of 2010, including both master and doctor students. Dr. Zubair was the only awardee. During the master and doctor course in kato lab., he has studied a variety of areas including network security, mobile network, ad hoc and sensor network, smart grid, and etc. He has published many high impact factor papers in IEEE journals and conferences and received several prestigious awards.

Substantiative experiments of the Cluster Project were conducted in Izu

walk result In Shuzenji, Izu, Shizuoka, field tests towards the knowledge cluster project were conducted on Mar. 15, 2009. This project is related to the cluster project sponsored by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The experiment description is that participants of nordic walking event were equipped with sensors, which collect, deliver and analyze their motion information over wireless networks in real time.

This workshop is related to the cluster project sponsored by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. First of all, Prof.Nemoto made a presentation about the cluster project. Then several distinguished professor and researchers from Japan, U.S., China, Australia, and Canada made their presentations regarding the networks for health and welfare. Prof.Kato organized this workshop as chairman, and it ended successfully.

Hiroki Nishiyama is appointed as a assistant professor of the GSIS, Tohoku University

Masahiro Kobayashi’s paper is accepted at IEEE Transactions on Multimedia

Masahiro Kobayashi’s paper, titled “Robust and Efficient Stream Delivery for Application Layer Multicasting in Heterogeneous Networks,” is accepted at IEEE Transactions on Multimedia on Sep. 15, 2008. It is the first achievement in Kato Lab. that a paper of a student who is in the master cource is accepted at IEEE Transactions.

Kato Lab. conducted an experiment of network construction, using wireless sensor nodes

exp In early July, we conducted an experiment of network construction using wireless sensor nodes, Mica2, which is manufactured by Crossbow. This Mica2 has many sensor and sensed information can be transmitted toward the router. The picture shows the scene of the network experiment, which is composed of sensor nodes and the topology of the network.

Nishiyama and Kashibuchi were awarded in 2006, so our students were awarded two years in a row.

3students_globecom2007 carlos_globecom2007 In Washington, DC, the 50th IEEE Global Communications Conference Exhibition & Industry Forum was held from November 26 to 30 2007, and Juan Carlos Fernandez, Do Van Giang and Masahiro Kobayashi made presentations at this conference respectively. Fernandez’s title was “A Bandwidth Aggregation-aware QoS Negotiation Mechanism for Next-Generation Wireless Networks,” and Giang’s title was “A Fair and Lifetime-Maximum Routing Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks,” and Kobayashi made a presentation titled “NHAG: Network-aware Hierarchical Arrangement Graph of Application Layer Multicast in Heterogeneous Networks.” In addtion to these presentations, Professor Nei Kato was sent the certificate of gratitude because he took the Internet protocol symposium chair in this conference.

Nishiyama made a presentation in the invited session at IEEE WRECOM in Roma

wrecom2007-nishiyama In Roma, Italy, the IEEE WRECOM (Wireless Rural and Emergency Communications Conference) was taken place from October 1 to 2 and Hiroki Nishiyama, a doctor course student belonging to Kato lab, made a presentation in the invited session on October 2. The title was “On the Performance of Congestion Control Protocols in Lossy Wireless Networks,” and he presented about the preformance of TCP over wireless networks at high bit error rates.

Hirayama presented at ICDAR 2007 in Brazil

Junichi Hirayama, second year master’s course student, presented at ICDAR (International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition) 2007 in Curitiba, Brazil on September 25th. He proposed a new approach for high-accuracy similar character recognition in the presentation, whose title was “A Classfier of Similar Character using Compound Mahalanobis Function based on Difference Subspace.”

The institute of electronics, information and communication engineers (IEICE) workshop on network system (NS) was taken place in Katahira Campus, Tohoku University on 20 and 21 September. Masaru Dobashi, second year Master’s cource student belonging to Kato laboratory, presented there as incentive speaker because his presentation at NS workshop in Okinawa, in March 2007, was rated high. In addition to him, Sho Kato and Masahiro Kobayashi, first year Master’s cource students, also presented there.

Zubair and Ikeda presented at IEEE ICC 2007 in Scotland

Yuji Ikeda and Zubair Md. Fadlullah, both are second year Master’s course students belonging to Kato lab, presented at IEEE International Conference on Communications 2007. Both students made presentations on June 26. Zubair proposed a new scheme to detect attacks against cryptographic protocols and Ikeda presented about a new mobility management method for hierarchical Mobile IPv6 networks.

Prof. Kato made a presentation at the 3rd meeting of SCOPE

In Tokyo, the meeting for announcing the results of Strategic Information and Communications R&D Promotion Programme (SCOPE) was held on June 14. At the meeting, Professor Kato presented the results of research related to SCOPE. SCOPE project was started by Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to innovate information technologies for realizing advanced ubiquitous society. The objective of this meeting was sparking up debate to the further works by presenting 48 results of SCOPE-project research. In the meeting, poster session was also taken place.

A B-3 student, Miyao joined Kato lab by early graduation system

A third year undergraduate student, Miyao entered Kato laboratory by early graduation system of Tohoku university. He entered our laboratory one year early because he got certified by university as student with outstanding academic results. By using this system, students in Tohoku university can graduate from the university in three years, while general students take four years.

Prof. Kato received the Funai Award for Advancement of Information Sciences

Professor Kato, Professor Yoshiaki Nemoto (Nemoto Laboratory, Research Leader), and Assistant Professor Tarik Taleb (Hashimoto Laboratory) received the Funai Award for Advancement of Information Sciences (船井情報科学振興賞) from Funai Information Science Foundation (財団法人船井情報科学振興財団), since the pioneering research activities on next-generation network protocol for realizing fusion between satellite networks and terrestrial network was highly appreciated by the community.

Takahashi presented at AIAA ICSSC 2007

Tetsuya Takahashi, second year Master’s course student, presented at 25th AIAA International Communications Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC 2007) in Seoul, Korea on April 13. The title of presentation was “Improving ELB in Multi-Hop Satellite Constellations with Short ISL Delays,” and proposed a new scheme for load balancing over next generation satellite networks.
