Tohoku University has conferred Associate Professor Yuichi Kawamoto with title “Distinguished Researchers of Tohoku University”. 

 Associate Professor Yuichi Kawamoto was honored with The Young Scientists’ Award by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). This prestigious award acknowledges individuals who have made outstanding research contributions in the field of Science and Technology Promotion, recognizing their advancements in the development of science and technology.

Each of “Efficient Phase Control Determination by Codebook without CSI for Standalone IRS Realization” presented by Hibi (M2) at GLOBECOM 2022 and “Federated Reinforcement Learning-Based Resource Allocation for D2D-Aided Digital Twin Edge Networks in 6G Industrial IoT” presented by Guo (D2) at IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics was received the 2022 IEEE ComSoc Sendai Chapter Student Excellent Research Award. This award is granted to brilliant young researchers by IEEE ComSoc Sendai Chapter.

 On March 24, 2023, Tanaka (M1) and Matsushita (M2) received the “Best Contribution Award” of the Student Society Activity Contribution Award. This award is given to students who have made significant contributions to the revitalization of the activities of the Tohoku Branch of IEICE through voluntary and active participation in its management.

The graduation ceremony of Tohoku University was held on Mar. 24, 2023. Takahashi (D3) was awarded the President’s Award of Tohoku University. These awards are selected from 138 students of the GSIS doctor and master courses. The President’s Award is given only to 2 students.

Hiroaki Hashida (D2, JSPS Researcher) received the Telecommunications Advancement Foundation Award Telecom System Technology Award for Students. This award is given to students who have conducted research on the dissemination, development, and promotion of telecommunications from a technical and engineering viewpoint while enrolled in a university undergraduate or graduate school master’s or doctoral course. The award ceremony was held on March 22, 2023 at the Imperial Hotel in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.

 On March 5, 2023, a drone flight experience using programming was held for elementary school students at the National Michinoku Morinokohan Park. The Michinoku Park Management Center hosted the event, and our lab members provided full cooperation. A total of 16 elementary school students participated in the morning and afternoon sessions.

 Assistant Prof. Tiago, Research Assistant Prof. Shikhar, Hashida(D2), Yishi(D1), Qi(D2), Okawara(M1), Hibi(M1), Tanaka(M1), Matsura(B4), Endo(B4), Sekimori(B4) and Kato(B4) made presentations, and Assistant Prof. Tiago and Qi(D2) was awarded the Best Presentation Award at the A3 Foresight Program 2023 Workshop was held on 20-22 February 2023 in Seoul, Korea.

Hiroaki Hashida (D2, JSPS Fellow) was awarded Yasujiro Niwa Outstanding Paper Award, which is given to the researcher who announced original and excellent contribution in the fields of electronic engineering and information communication and also other related fields such as computer science from 1977. This prize was established to commemorate Dr. Yasujiro Niwa, the first president of Tokyo Denki University. The award ceremony was held at Kitasenju Campus of Tokyo Denki University, with attendance of Ibamoto Gakucho.

 Hiroaki Hashida (D2, JSPS Fellow) was awarded RIEC Tohoku University Student Award, which is created by the Research Institute of Electrical Communication at Tohoku University. This prize is given to honor promising and excellent graduate students, who are expected to make remarkable contributions to the scientific study in the field of electrical communication in the coming future.

In January 2023, Professor Kato, Associate Professor Kawamoto, Assistant Professor Tiago and Hashida (D2) visited Tennessee Tech University as part of the NICT Japan-US Joint Research Project (JUNO).

A3 Foresight Program 2022 Workshop was held on 18-20 December 2022 in Ariake, Tokyo.

Sekimori (B4) made a presentation entitled “Radio Wave Propagation Property Evaluation of Transparent Reflective Film and the Effects of Shape Variation in Real Environments” at RCS that was held in Maebashi, Gunma from Jan. 2023.

For his contributions to Multi-Access Edge Computing and Beyond 5G Networks, Assistant Prof. Tiago received the Outstanding Young Researcher Award from the IEEE Communications Society Asia-Pacific Region.

Professor Kato received certificate of appreciation from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) for his outstanding achievements in the research and development of disaster-resistant information and communication technologies.

 Prof. Kato was selected as one of Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2022 in the field of Computer Science for the fourth consecutive year.

Hashida (D2) made a presentation entitled “Experimental Evaluations with Transparent Reflectors at 60 GHz” at RCS that was held in Fukuoka, Fukuoka from Nov. 2022.

Takahashi (D3) made a presentation entitled “Transmit Power Control of HAPS for Two-Way Relay Communication in Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks” at ICSSC 2022 that was held in Stresa, Italy from Oct. 2022.

Hashida (D2) made a presentation entitled “Selective Reflection Control-based Channel-estimation Overhead Reduction in Distributed IRS-aided Communication” and received award at IEEE TOWERS in Kansai that was held in Osaka on Oct. 2022. 

Prof. Kato received 2022 IEEE  Vehicular Technology Society　Outstanding Service Award from IEEE Vehicular Technology Society due to his exemplary service and leadership as Editor-in-Chief  of the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology from 2017 to 2021.

At VTC2022-Spring (Helsinki, Finland), in June 2022, “Interference Suppression by Directivity Control Towards Frequency Sharing for Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks in Internet of Things” was awarded “VTS Tokyo/Japan Chapter 2022 Student Paper Award” for a paper by Matsushita (M2), and “Radio Access Control of Access Points and Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces for Data Rate Improvement in Joint Transmission” was awarded “VTS Tokyo/Japan Chapter 2022 Young Researcher’s Encouragement Award” for a paper by Nakazato (M2). 

Research Assistant Prof. Shikhar was awarded Excellent Resarch Award for Young Scientists of ECEI on March 8th, 2022.　This award is given by the Research Faculty Committee of ECEI at Tohoku University in honor of young researchers whose first papers have been published in a number of outstanding journals selected by their laboratories.

Ishigami (M2) was awarded the “Best Contribution Award” of the Student Conference Activity Contribution Award on March 11th, 2022. This award is given to students who have made significant contributions to the revitalization of the Tohoku Section of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers by voluntarily and actively participating in its management.

IEEE Communications Society Internet of Things, Ad Hoc & Sensor Networks Technical Committee presented 2021 TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD to Prof. Kato at ICC’21 for his excellent contributions in Internet of Things, Ad Hoc & Sensor Networks areas.

Prof. Kato received appreciation certificate from IEEE Communications Society President due to his contributions to the Society during the years of 2020 and 2021 as the Vice-President in charge of MEMBERS & GLOBAL ACTIVITIES.

2021年11月にオンラインで開催されたIEEE IC-NIDC 2021において、高橋（D2）が「A Practical Approach for SNR-based Subchannel Allocation Considering Inter-Beam Interference in a Satellite Communication System」について発表し、Best Paper Awardを受賞しました。

Prof. Kato was selected as one of Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2021 in the field of Computer Science for the third consecutive year. Dr. Zubair Md. Fadlullah (currently Associate Professor at Lakehead University, Canada) and Dr. Fengxiao Tang (currently Professor at Zhongnan University, China), both of whom worked in our laboratory, were also selected for the first time. Both have received the Tohoku University President’s Award in 2010 and 2018, respectively.

2021年11月、無線通信システム研究会が長崎県長崎市・オンラインのハイブリッド形式で開催され、橋田（D1）が「マルチビーム通信システムにおけるユーザモビリティを考慮したIntelligent Reflecting Surface の割り当てに関する検討」について発表を行いました。

Hashida (D1) was awarded the IEICE RCS Active Researcher Award. This award is given to six researchers under the age of 35 who have given outstanding presentations at IEICE RCS Conferences from May 2020 to April 2021.

Shimada (M2) was awarded the “Best Contribution Award” of the Student Conference Activity Contribution Award on March 24th, 2021. This award is granted to brilliant young researchers by IEEE ComSoc Sendai Chapter.

Shimada (M2) was awarded the C&C Best Paper Award for Young Scientists by the paper entitled “Novel Workload Balancing Method for UAV-based Edge Cloud Computing Systems with Handover” at ICC 2020. This Award is given to up to three papers presented at international conferences each year under the “Grant for International Conference Paper Presenters” program.

Shikhar Verma (D3) received the Student Travel Grant for “A Novel IoT-Aware WLAN Environment Identification for Efficient Internet-Wide Port Scan” at the IEEE Global Communications Conference 2020 (GLOBECOM 2020) held in Taiwan in December 2020. 

Shikhar Verma (D3) made a presentation entitled “Security Analysis of Network-oblivious Internet-wide Scan for IEEE 802.11ah Enabled IoT” at VTC2020-Fall, held online in November 2020.

Shikhar Verma (D3) made presentations at IEEE Global Communications Conference 2020 (GLOBECOM 2020) which was held in Taipei, Taiwan, from Dec. 2020.

Prof. Yuichi Kawamoto was awarded the IEEE COMSOC Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award. IEEE COMSOC Asia-Pacific belongs to the IEEE Communications Society, which is the best information and communications society in the world. This award is given to only six researchers who are under 35 years old and have achieved excellent results over the last three years. He received the award for his outstanding research work on unmanned aircraft networks.

In December 2020, the International Conference on Emerging Technologies for Communications 2020 (ICETC 2020) held online, and Takahashi (D1) delivered an invited talk entitled “An Initial Study on Designing Prediction-Based Resource Allocation in Satellite Communication Systems”.

Prof. Kato was selected as one of the Web of Science’s Highly Cited Researchers 2020 (Computer Science) for the second year in a row.

At VTC-FALL 2020 (virtual conference), in November 2020, “Security Analysis of Network-oblivious Internet-wide Scan for IEEE 802.11ah Enabled IoT” was awarded “VTS Tokyo/Japan Chapter 2020 Student Paper Award” for a paper by Shikhar Verma (D3).

In November 2020, Specially Appointed Associate Prof. Bomin Mao’s paper, “An Absorbing Markov Chain Based Model to Solve Computation and Communication Tradeoff in GPU-Accelerated MDRUs for Safety Confirmation in Disaster Scenarios IEEE Transactions on Computers” was awarded IEEE CS Tokyo/Japan Joint Local Chapters Young Author Award 2020. This award is a new award established in 2020 for the members of IEEE Computer Society Tokyo/Japan Joint Chapter.

Takahashi (D1) and Hashida (M2) will be appointed as a special researcher (DC) of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) for the 2021.

Prof. Kawamoto, Takahashi (D1), and Hashida (M2)  made presentations at The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) Society Conference (virtual conference) , September 2020.

On August 21, 2020, Takahashi (D1) made an incentive presentation titled “A Study on the Effect of Multi-Beam Placement Control on Throughput in High Throughput Satellite Communication System” at Technical committee on Satellite Communications.

The paper by Takahashi (D1), “A Study on Dual Control of Transmit Power and Beam Directivity for Flexible Resource Allocation in HTS Communication System”, won the Satellite Communications Research Award 2019.  The award is given to a lecture paper given in 2019 at the IEICE Satellite Communications Research Group that is recognized as particularly outstanding and has potential for future success.

Hashida（M2）made a presentation entitled “Intelligent Reflecting Surface Placement Optimization in Cellular Communication Networks for Aerial Vehicles” at RCS (virtual conference)  that was held on July 10th, 2020.

The paper titled “Adaptive Multi-Beam Arrangement for Improving Throughput in HTS Communication System” , written by Masaki Takahashi (D1), won the Best Paper Award in IEEE ICC 2020, which took place from Jun. 7th to 11th, 2020. The award is given to the author(s) of the best paper presented at the conference. Takahashi was also awarded the Student Travel Grant, which is given to a promising young researchers, for this work.

At IEEE International Conference on Communications (virtual conference) that was held from Jun. 7th to 11th, 2020, Takahashi (D1) made a presentation entitled “Adaptive Multi-Beam Arrangement for Improving Throughput in HTS Communication System”, Shimada (M2) made a presentation entitled “Novel Workload Balancing Method for UAV-based Edge Cloud Computing Systems with Handover” and Hashida (M2) made a presentation entitled “Impact of Internet-Wide scanning on IoT Data Communication in Wireless LANs.”

Tiago Koketsu Rodrigues (D3) was awarded the President’s Award of Tohoku University and the Dean’s Award of the Graduate School of Information Sciences (GSIS) of Tohoku University. These awards are selected from 150 students of the GSIS doctor and master courses. 

“A Study on Allocation of Communication Resources and Computing Resources in Edge Cloud Computing Using UAV” was awarded the “Network System Research Award” for a paper by Shimada (M1). This award is given to papers presented at the Network Systems Research Group that are particularly outstanding and are expected to be active in the future.

Takahashi (M2) made a presentation entitled “A Study on the Effect of Multi-Beam Placement Control on Throughput in High Throughput Satellite Communication System” and Tsuchida (M1) made a presentation entitled “A Study on Power Control Method Using Q-learning to Extend Life of Satellite-Borne Batteries in Low-Earth Orbit Satellite Communication System” at Technical committee on Satellite Communications in Ishigaki, Okinawa that was held from Feb. 19 to 20, 2020.

IEEE Communications Society Asia-Pacific Board presented Best Paper Award to Prof. Kato.

 Hayato Shimada(M1) made a presentation at Technical Committee on Network Systems (NS) , that was held in Tokushima, Japan from Dec. 2019, and was awarded the Young Investigator Award.

Takuto Mitsuhashi (M1) made presentations at IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM 2019) , that was held in Hawaii, USA,  from Dec. 2019.

Prof. Kato delivered the keynote speech entitled “Deep Learning in Network Traffic Control　—How far we have come and future challenges” at 25th IEEE International conference on Parallel and Dostrobuted Systems (ICPADS 2019) in Tianjin.

Prof. Kato received appreciation certificate from IEEE Communications Society President due to his contributions to the Society during the years of 2018 and 2019 as the Vice-President in charge of MEMBERS & GLOBAL ACTIVITIES.

According to Clarivate Analytics, Prof. Kato has been selected as a 2019 Highly Cited Researcher in Computer Science field. 

The paper “Cloudlets Activation Scheme for Scalable Mobile Edge Computing with Transmission Power Control and Virtual Machine Migration,” published by Tiago Koketsu Rodrigues as the first author, was selected as the best paper of 2018 by the IEEE Transactions on Computers. This award is granted annually to a single paper only based on the impact of the research and ideas of
the manuscript. IEEE Transactions on Computers is the flagship journal of the IEEE Computer Society, an important reference in all areas of computer design.

Kato-Kawamoto Laboratory has won the EKIDEN of ECEI and RIEC Championship for the 11th time. Next year we aim to win again.

Prof. Kato delivered the keynote speech entitled “Deep Learning in Network Traffic Control —How far we have come and future challenges—” at 2019 International Academicia Summit on Smart X & APEC Innovation Technology Dialogue (APEC ITD 2019) in China.

IEEE Communications Society Green Communications and Computing Technical Committee presented 2019 DISTINGUISHED TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNITION AWARD to Prof. Kato at ICC’19(Shanghai, May) for his excellent contributions in Green Communications and Computing areas.

Tohn Furutani (M2) made presentations at The 21st International Symposium On Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC 2018) , that was held in Chiang Rai, Thailand from November, 2018. The title of Tohn Furutani’s presentation was “UAV-Assisted Information Diffusion Technique with Uniquely Virtual Cells Based on Wi-Fi Direct”.

Prof. Nei Kato, Assoc. Prof. Hiroki Nishiyama received Prizes for Science and Technology from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; MEXT. This award is given to who made excellent research achievements in Science and Technology Promotion Category as the Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Prof. Kato delivered a keynote speech at 22nd IEEE International Conference on Parallel and Distributed System(ICPADS2016) entitled “IoT:Towards a Connected Era – Research Direction and Social Impacts -“

We performed a demonstration of Relay-by-Smartphone^® assuming a situation for collecting information of disaster victims outside of communication range, and it was successful in gathering disaster information (name and face photograph of victims) in emergency response headquarters at San Remigio, Cebu, Philippines on Aug. 2nd, 2016. The Relay-by-Smartphone^® technique has been developed by our laboratory.

Through the questionnaire of this demonstration and Relay-by-Smartphone^®, it has been confirmed that the Relay-by-Smartphone^® technique can help gather information, indicating its usefulness in disaster situations. Also, many answers of the questionnaire suggested possibilities for its use in daily life.

Due to their notable contributions, the Certificate of Appreciation was given by the Municipal Mayor of San Remigio to Prof. Nei Kato, Assoc. Prof. Hiroki Nishiyama, Daiki Murayama (M2), Naoki Miyashita (M2), Naoto Yamada (M2), Hiroaki Takagi (M1), and Yuki Takahashi (M1).

2015年11月17日～19日にフィリピン セブ島のサン・レミジオ市において、耐災害通信技術の実証実験を行い、 現地にて展開されているNTT未来ねっとが開発した「移動式ICTユニット」と、当研究室が開発した 「通信性能最適化アルゴリズム」の連動における実現可能性の検証に成功しました。
本実験は現地にて高く評価され、本実験に参加した加藤寧教授、西山大樹准教授、須藤克弥（D3）、村山大貴（M1）、 栗林秀樹（B4）が市長より感謝状を受賞しました。（学年は2015年11月時点）

Thuan Ngo (D3), Masanori Horiuchi (M2) and Hideki Kuribayashi (M1) made presentations at IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC2016) , that was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from May 23th to 27th, 2016. The title of Thuan Ngo’s presentation was “GHAR: Graph-based Hybrid Adaptive Routing for Cognitive Radio Based Disaster Response Networks”, Masanori Horiuchi’s presentation was “Throughput Maximization for Long-Distance Real-Time Data Transmission over Multiple UAVs” and Hideki Kuribayashi’s presentation was “A Mobility-Based Mode Selection Technique for Fair Spatial Dissemination of Data in Multi-Channel Device-to-Device Communication”. In this conference, Thuan Ngo and Hideki Kuribayashi received the Best Paper Award. The ICC is one of the largest conferences that the IEEE Communications Society organizes. This year, 39% of the 2,469 submitted papers were accepted, and 15 of them were chosen as the Best Paper Award.

Thuan Ngo (D3) made a presentation entitled “A Novel Graph-Based Topology Control Cooperative Algorithm for Maximizing Throughput of Disaster Recovery Networks” at the IEEE 83rd Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2016-Spring) that was held in Nanjing, China from May 15th to 18th, 2016, and he was awarded the Best Paper Award.

Due to the excellent achievements and contributions to the ad hoc and sensor network community in the world, Prof. Kato was awarded the 2016 OUTSTANDING SERVICE & LEADERSHIP RECOGNITION from IEEE Communications Society Ad Hoc & Sensor Networks Technical Committee.

On May 21st, 2016, Associate Professor Hiroki Nishiyama was awarded the Research Encouragement Award by the Miyagi Foundation for the Promotion of Industrial Science. This award is given by the Miyagi Foundation for the Promotion of Industrial Science to excellent researches which contribute to the promotion of the industrial science field. Associate Professor Nishiyama won this award for the outstanding research achievement in the development of communication functions for mobile devices in real-time IoT systems.

Assistant Professor Zubair Md. Fadlullah was awarded the Tokin Foundation Research Encouragement Award on March 8th, 2016. This award is given by the Tokin Foundation for Promotion of Science and Technology to recognize research works of young researchers in the engineering field. The selection of the award is based on the originality, inventiveness, difficulty, and contributions to academia and industry of the research.

The graduation ceremony of Tohoku University was held on Mar. 25, 2016 at the Sendai City Gymnasium. Yuichi Kawamoto (D3, JSPS Fellow) was awarded the President’s Award of Tohoku University and the Dean’s Award of the Graduate School of Information Sciences (GSIS) of Tohoku University. Keisuke Miyanabe (M2) was also awarded the Dean’s Award. These awards are selected from 150 students of the GSIS doctor and master courses. The President’s Award is given only to 2 students, and from the Kato-Nishiyama Laboratory, this is the 6th President’s Award. The Dean’s Award is given to 5 students and 2 were from our laboratory. Students of our laboratory have won the Dean’s Award for 6 years in a row and 2 students receiving the Dean’s Award at the same time is the third time.

Naoki Miyashita (M1) made a presentation entitled “A Study on Novel Using Technique of Digital Beam Forming in the Satellite Network System” and was awarded the Best Presentation Award at the A3 annual workshop held from Feb. 17th to 19th, 2016 in Okinawa, Japan.

2月20日に開催された東北大学大学院情報科学研究科主催のシンポジウムにおいて、加藤教授が「もしも災害で携帯がつながらなくなったら -被災地でデータをリレーする災害通信網-」と題して講演を行いました。本講演では、スマホdeリレー^®の実証実験をはじめとした本研究室の防災に関する取り組みを紹介し、災害時のデータ通信網の技術課題やスマホdeリレー^®の実用化に向けた今後の展望について見解を述べました。 また、本講演の模様は、NHKにてニュース報道（2月21日 ）されました。

This award is given to only five researchers who are under 35 years old and have achieved excellent results over the last three years. He was awarded this exceptional award for his excellent research achievements in wireless networking and security.

Kenta Ito (M2) made a presentation entitled “A Power-Aware Air Interface Scheduling Scheme for Improving Network Connectivity in Solar Powered Wireless Mesh Networks” at 2015 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM 2015) , that was held in San Diego, USA from Dec. 6th to 10th, 2015.

On Nov. 30th, 2015, the awards ceremony of IEEE Sendai Section Student Awards 2015 was held at the Tohoku University, Katahira Campus. In this ceremony, Naoki Miyashita was awarded The Best Paper Prize for the presentation of “The Efficient Frequency Sharing in Integrated Satellite/Terrestrial Systems” made at the 2015 Tohoku-Section Joint Convention of Institutes of Electrical and Information Engineers, Japan, from Aug. 27th to 28th, 2015.

On Nov. 24th, 2015, we participated in a research interaction event which was held in Taipei, Taiwan, as part of the JST Infrastructure Development for Promoting International S&T Cooperation. We had discussions on network construction technology needed to realize IoT services for the research on “Effective and Secure innovative ID management technology for Large Scale IoT”. In this event, there were research reports and discussions in the form of workshops at the National Taiwan University, and there were valuable exchanges of ideas between researchers.

Yuichi Kawamoto (D3, JSPS Fellow) was awarded RIEC Tohoku University Student Award, which is created by the Research Institute of Electrical Communication at Tohoku University. This prize is given to honor promising and excellent graduate students, who are expected to make remarkable contributions to the scientific study in the field of electrical communication in the coming future.

In Shenzhen, China, Yunseong Lee (M1) made a presentation entitled “A Novel Network Design and Operation for Reducing Transmission Power in Cloud Radio Access Network with Power over Fiber” and received the Best Paper Award at IEEE/CIC International Conference on Communications in China 2015 (ICCC 2015) that was held from Nov. 2 to 4, 2015.

In Nanjing, China, Keisuke Sato made a presentation about “A Modeling Technique Utilizing Feedback Control Theory for Performance Evaluation of IoT System in Real-time” and he received the Best Paper Award at 2015 International Conference on Wireless Communications and Signal Processing (WCSP 2015) held from Oct. 15 to 17, 2015.

須藤克弥（D3、JSPS研究員）がJSPS海外特別研究員（Postdoctoral Fellow for Research Abroad）に採用されることが内定しました。我が国の学術の将来を担う国際的視野に富む有能な研究者を養成・確保することを目的としている本制度では、 若手のポスドクや助教が採用されることが多く、博士課程在学中の学生が採用されることは稀であり、今後の活躍が期待されます。

Associate Professor Hiroki Nishiyama, NTT docomo, and Kozo Keikaku Engineering have shared the Advanced Technical Grand Award of Originality, which is given to the young researchers who announced an excellent contribution. This prize aims to promote cooperation among government, industry, and academia and develop technical experts and students of science and technology. The award ceremony was held at the Meiji Kinenkan in Akasaka, Tokyo, with the attendance of Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado on Jul. 8, 2015.

Keisuke Miyanabe (M2) made a presentation entitled “Novel Power Saving Mechanisms for a Cloud Radio Access Network with Power over Fiber” and was awarded the Best Presentation Award at the A3 annual workshop held from February 1st to 4th, 2015 in Beijing, China.

Prof. Kato took over as the EiC of IEEE Network Magazine from July 1st, 2015. IEEE Network Magazine is the most influential magazine in the networking area with high Impact Factor (IF).

・Introduction of new EiC

In London, UK, Yuichi Kawamoto (D3, JSPS Fellow) and Shin Koseki (M2) made presentations at IEEE International Conference on Communications (IEEE ICC 2015), that was held from June 8 to 12 2015. The title of Yuichi Kawamoto’s presentation was “A Method for Collecting Uniform Amount of Fresh Data from Areas with Varying Population Density” and Shin Koseki’s presentation was “Earth Stations Deployment for Maximizing System Throughput in Satellite/Solar-Powered Mesh Integrated Network”.

The IEEE 81st Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2015-Spring) was held in Glasgow, Scotland, from May. 11 to 14, 2015, and Katsuya Suto (D3, JSPS Fellow) made a presentation of “A Failure-Tolerant and Spectrum-Efficient Wireless Data Center Network Design for Improving Performance of Big Data Mining”, and he received the IEEE VTS Japan 2015 Young Researcher’s Encouragement Award.

The commencement ceremony of Tohoku University was held on Mar. 25, 2015 at the Sendai City Gymnasium. The A3 Foresight Program was established for the world-leading academic research on “Next Generation Networks and Network Security” and fostering of young researchers by the cooperation between many research institutions in Japan, China and Korea.

Kazuma Kaneko was awarded the Best Presentation Award at the A3 annual workshop held from 4th to 7th February, 2015 in Busan in Korea.

In Vancouver, Canada, Keisuke Miyanabe (M1) made a presentation about “Synchronized Power Saving Mechanisms for Battery-Powered Mobile Terminals in Smart FiWi Networks” and he received the VTS Japan 2014 Student Paper Award at IEEE 80th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2014-Fall) held from Sep. 14 to 17, 2014.

In Istanbul, Turkey, Yuichi Kawamoto (D2, JSPS Fellow) made a presentation at IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC 2014) that was held from April 6 to 9, 2014. His paper’s title was “An Efficient Traffic Detouring Method by Using Device-to-Device Communication Technologies in Heterogeneous Network.” At this conference, Kawamoto received the Best Paper Award.

Yuichi Kawamoto (D1, JSPS Fellow) and Katsuya Suto (D1) won appraisal for their research results about “衛星センサネットワークにおけるリアルタイムデータ収集のための回線割当方式” (Yuichi Kawamoto) and “広域分散ストレージシステムにおける効率的データ転送方式” (Katsuya Suto) presented in the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) Society Conference 2013. Moreover, because of this, they received the IEICE Society Conference 2013 Academic Encouragement Award (Mar. 19th, 2014).

平成25年7月30日と31日に開催される東北大学工学部情報知能システム総合学科（追記：2015年4月、電気情報物理工学科に名称変更）のオープンキャンパスにおいて、スマートフォンだけでつくるネットワーク（スマホdeリレー^®）を使ったデモンストレーションを実施します。また、無線通信機を搭載した無人飛行機や超高速インターネット衛星との接続実験も公開します。スマホのみでネットワークを自由自在に形成（携帯電話回線ではなくWiFiのみを使用）してメール送受信を可能にするスマホdeリレー^®は、衛星や無人飛行機との接続によってメールリレーの範囲を大幅に拡大できるため、特に災害時などに被災地域内のみならず遠隔地をも含めた情報共有を可能にする最先端ICTツールとして期待されています。

JSPS Fellow, Dr. Jiajia Liu was awarded 2012 Tohoku University Professor Genkuro Fujino Award. Professor Genkuro Fujino Award is given to the talented graduate students from China who are expected to achieve major results in the future. This prize was established to commemorate Professor Genkuro Fujino, the teacher of Lu Xun sensei. The presentation ceremony was held at Lu Xun lecture hall with attendance of Satomi Soucho, and Takeshi Ebata, Chairman of Miyagi Japan-China Friendship Association as shown in the picture.

The article entitled “Toward Intelligent Machine-to-Machine Communications in Smart Grid”, which appeared in IEEE Communications Magazine, volume 49, issue 4, April 2011, was amongst the top ten downloaded articles in IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) in April(reference) and May(reference), 2011. Also, the article was listed in the top 100 downloaded articles in IEEE Xplore for several months up to August 2011.(reference) Within a short time, it has been cited 34 times as reported by Google Scholar. This paper was co-authored with NTT Energy and Environment System Laboratories under a Smart Grid joint project.

In Paris, France, Jiajia Liu (D3) and Yuichi Kawamoto (M2) made a presentation at IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC 2012) that was held from April 1 to 4 2012. Liu’s title was “Performance Modeling for Two-hop Relay with Erasure Coding in MANETs” and Kawamoto’s title was “Assessing Packet Delivery Delay in Multi-Layered Satellite Networks.” Professor Nei Kato, Assistant Professor Hiroki Nishiyama, and Jiajia Liu received the Best Paper Award, Kawamoto received the Student Travel Grant at this conference.

The invited paper entitled “Experiment of Satellite Communication Systems: Present State and Future Prospects” has been ranked No.1 in access ranking. The paper was published on IEICE Trans. on Communications(Japanese) in Mar. 2011.

In Florida, USA, Ahmed Abdulla (M1) , Hans Livingstone (M1) , and Duarte Pedro (M2) made a presentation at IEEE Global Communications Conference Exhibition & Industry Forum (GLOBECOM 2010) that was held from December 6 to 10 2010. Abdulla’s title was “HYMN to Improve the Longevity of Wireless Sensor Networks,” Livingstone’s title was “Gateway Selection in Multi-hop Wireless Networks using Route and Link Optimization,” and Pedro’s title was “Partially Overlapped Channel Assignment on Wireless Mesh Network Backbone.” Professor Nei Kato, Assistant Professor Hiroki Nishiyama, Abdulla and Livingstone received the Best Paper Award, Pedro received the Student Travel Grant at this conference.

In Sendai Mediatheque, the 65th Tohoku University Science Cafe was taken place on November 26 2010. At this seminar, Professor Nei Kato gave a speech, and Kato laboratory members interacted with participants.

In Roma, Italy, the IEEE WRECOM (Wireless Rural and Emergency Communications Conference) was taken place from October 1 to 2 and Hiroki Nishiyama, a doctor course student belonging to Kato lab, made a presentation in the invited session on October 2. The title was “On the Performance of Congestion Control Protocols in Lossy Wireless Networks,” and he presented about the preformance of TCP over wireless networks at high bit error rates.

Yuji Ikeda and Zubair Md. Fadlullah, both are second year Master’s course students belonging to Kato lab, presented at IEEE International Conference on Communications 2007. Both students made presentations on June 26. Zubair proposed a new scheme to detect attacks against cryptographic protocols and Ikeda presented about a new mobility management method for hierarchical Mobile IPv6 networks.

In Tokyo, the meeting for announcing the results of Strategic Information and Communications R&D Promotion Programme (SCOPE) was held on June 14. At the meeting, Professor Kato presented the results of research related to SCOPE. SCOPE project was started by Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to innovate information technologies for realizing advanced ubiquitous society. The objective of this meeting was sparking up debate to the further works by presenting 48 results of SCOPE-project research. In the meeting, poster session was also taken place.

2007 IEEE Sarnoff Symposium was taken place in Princeton, New Jersey, U.S. from April 30 to May 2 and Professor Kato presented as invited speaker about statistics-information-based security measure over wireless sensor networks.

A third year undergraduate student, Miyao entered Kato laboratory by early graduation system of Tohoku university. He entered our laboratory one year early because he got certified by university as student with outstanding academic results. By using this system, students in Tohoku university can graduate from the university in three years, while general students take four years.

Professor Kato, Professor Yoshiaki Nemoto (Nemoto Laboratory, Research Leader), and Assistant Professor Tarik Taleb (Hashimoto Laboratory) received the Funai Award for Advancement of Information Sciences (船井情報科学振興賞) from Funai Information Science Foundation (財団法人船井情報科学振興財団), since the pioneering research activities on next-generation network protocol for realizing fusion between satellite networks and terrestrial network was highly appreciated by the community.

Tetsuya Takahashi, second year Master’s course student, presented at 25th AIAA International Communications Satellite Systems Conference (ICSSC 2007) in Seoul, Korea on April 13. The title of presentation was “Improving ELB in Multi-Hop Satellite Constellations with Short ISL Delays,” and proposed a new scheme for load balancing over next generation satellite networks.

Kenichi Kashibuchi received award from Tohoku university president and Hiroki Nishiyama received Electrical engineering, Communication engineering, Electronic engineering, and Information engineering (ECEI) Award. Kashibuchi attended the awarding ceremony in graduation ceremony 2007.
